Recovery on Water Helps Survivors Row to Good Health

Recovery on WaterExecutive Director of Recovery on Water (ROW), Jenn Gibbons, laughs when she explains how the small, not-for-profit that began in 2008, developed. "Rowing is a non-traditional sport, but it's low-impact, physically demanding, and accessible for any body type. It requires teamwork, accountability, perseverance and focus." As a result, it is an ideal sport for breast cancer survivors who are looking for a way to exercise on a regular basis, as well as a community that can relate to their experiences with cancer.

"ROW started out of the basic fact that regular exercise can reduce the recurrence of breast cancer in survivors by up to 50%," Jenn explained. "These women will undergo or have undergone surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, or a combination of all three in attempts to treat their disease. Treatments may leave survivors with significant side effects, including lymphedema, obesity, depression, and poor quality of life. ROW empowers them to step out of their comfort zone, and learn to trust their bodies and their teammates as part of the healing process."

Recovery on WaterThis is ROW's first year as a Komen Chicago grantee. The funds provided by the grant have enabled ROW to:

  1. Formally write their curriculum so that other organizations can replicate it or learn from it; and
  2. Allow the rowing coaches to attend a training session about cancer and exercise.

ROW currently has 40 women in the program, and hopes to grow to 100 members by 2017. "We have had great success with making fitness a part of women's lives," Jenn noted. "It is both community-based and fun." Learn more»
