Meet Komen Chicago's New Board President Sean Tenner!

sean tennerSean Tenner has served on Komen Chicago's Board since 2007, but recently began his term as President of the Board. "Komen used to be a client of mine when I was working in Washington D.C.," Sean noted. "Seeing Komen's growth over the years has been amazing, and it's great to continue working together as part of an affiliate office."

Among Sean's many goals for Komen Chicago, he hopes to increase Komen's presence in the civic and business communities. "Not only will it get more people involved and contributing to our organization, but I also think Komen has some incredible representatives that can help to educate people about breast cancer issues."

Sean also hopes to continue pushing forward on public policy in Illinois. He has played a significant role in several state bills that have led to ensuring better standards for clinical breast exams; reducing breast cancer disparity rates in Illinois; and ensuring medical costs associated with clinical trials are covered by insurance. "We want to keep Illinois a state leader in breast cancer policy," Sean emphasized.

In addition to continued financial growth, Sean also hopes to reach into the many, diverse communities across the Chicagoland Area to make them aware of Komen's services, as well as encourage ongoing partnerships.

When Sean is not running his consulting firm, KNI Communications, or serving Komen Chicago, he can be found enjoying Chicago Bears, Chicago Cubs and Vancouver Canucks games. Welcome Sean!

Aetna message boardLast year's Aetna booth included a message board for registrants to post why they were inspired to participate in the Race for the Cure. Rush-Copley Medical Center Aids Hispanic Community in Kane County

mariana arroyoThrough its Help for You: Breast Cancer Education and Assistance program, Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora provides community outreach and education about breast health to Latina women of Kane County.

Breast Health Outreach Coordinator, Mariana Arroyo, highlighted the many ways that Rush-Copley's program educates and supports the community, including:

  • Outreach programs: By working with schools, churches, food pantries and health fairs, the team goes out into the community to provide education about breast health, risk factors, screenings, and breast cancer resources.
  • Screening Days: Every 4-8 weeks, Mariana accompanies several women to get their office visit, clinical breast exam, pap smear and mammogram all in one day. Not only does this prevent women from having to schedule multiple appointments, but it also enables them to get the support they need throughout the screening process.
  • Support Group: Rush-Copley works with ALAS-WINGS, the Latina Association for Breast Cancer, to run a Spanish-speaking support group -- the only one of its kind in Kane County.
  • Vouchers: The program also provides bus vouchers and medication assistance to patients who are travelling to doctor's appointments and/or the hospital for cancer treatments.
  • Navigation: A nurse navigator at the breast cancer imaging center is able to help women who receive news of an abnormal mammogram get the next level of care and treatment they require.
  • Care Plans: An oncology nurse navigator completes a survivorship care plan for every patient who has undergone treatment to ensure that they have an up-to-date and accurate file of information about their diagnosis, treatment, medications and follow-up care.
  • Support Education & Tools: The program also assists minority and low-income, newly diagnosed breast cancer patients to connect with other local patients and survivors for mentoring and support, as well as provide education and tools to empower patients during their transition from treatment to everyday living.

Rush-Copley is a previously-funded Komen grantee, and has impacted over 200 women this year alone through their outreach programs.
