GRANTEE FOCUS

A Silver Lining Foundation Builds Upon Its Legacy

Silver Lining FoundationFounder and Chairman of A Silver Lining Foundation (ASLF), Dr. Sandy Goldberg, recalls the day she realized she needed to help women get access to breast health and breast cancer services. "I was a breast cancer survivor who had the benefit of great insurance, great doctors and a great support system," Dr. Sandy noted, "but I learned quickly that not everyone had those same resources, and worse yet, they felt they weren't worthy because they didn't have money or insurance. Something had to change."

In 2002, A Silver Lining Foundation was born, and its programming and services continue to grow in response to the needs of its constituents. One of its programs, Buy a Mom a Mammogram, is based on the teachings of Dr. Sandy's mother, the late Evelyn Goldberg. "My mother always said that we are all family, and we have to help each other through tough times," Dr. Sandy explained. As a result, Buy a Mom a Mammogram now partners with twelve area hospitals to fund the entire spectrum of breast health testing for uninsured and underinsured women and men, including screenings, diagnostics, ultrasounds and biopsies.

Silver Lining Foundation"Through our relationship with Komen Chicago, we can provide thousands of individuals with access to free testing and diagnostics. That means not only lives saved, but lives eased by learning that they are going to be taken care of, no matter what," Dr. Sandy highlighted.

In April, Dr. Sandy will celebrate 15 years as a breast cancer survivor. "I know my mother is smiling about what we do at ASLF." Learn more»
