Corner Bakery Cafe Provides Komen Chicago, Local Community With Support (and Great Food!)

Corner Bakery 2015 MDRFTC"Working with Komen Chicago is a great fit for Corner Bakery Cafe," explained Senior Marketing Manager Bailey Hughes. "Being involved in our local communities is a core value of our company, and supporting local organizations that our guests and employees are passionate about is our goal."

Corner Bakery Cafe has been involved with Susan G. Komen since 1995, when the company was bought by Brinker International Restaurants. Norman Brinker brought Corner Bakery into Komen Races for the Cure in several markets throughout the U.S., and the company has been providing delicious breakfasts ever since.

"Feeding the Survivors on Race morning is so fulfilling and one of our most rewarding events," Bailey noted. "We appreciate the support from Komen and its many volunteers, and enjoy being a partner year-round, whether it's at the Survivor Tent, in our 30 Chicagoland cafes or providing catering for people's events and celebrations. It's a part of being a community."

Many thanks to Corner Bakery Cafe for their delicious food and hot coffee at the Mother's Day Race for the Cure!

Lauran BromleyYou may have seen Lauran Bromley on stage as one of the announcers at the 2015 Mother's Day Race for the Cure! Lauran recently joined Komen Chicago's Board of Directors as Vice President, but she has been active with Susan G. Komen for many years. (Pictured here, on the left, with her step-daughter, Veronica.)

Having been treated for DCIS over 12 years ago, Lauran participated in several Komen 3 Day Walks, and even was the top fundraiser one year, donating over $38,000!

As a Board member, Lauran hopes to "get Komen's name back on top and let everyone know what we do." She went on to add, "Komen doesn't just educate; we also advocate, and help women navigate through screenings all the way to treatment and support. More people need to know what it is we stand for so we can get back to the business of saving lives."

When not working with Komen Chicago, Lauran travels extensively for her work manufacturing arcade games for children. Welcome Lauran!

Swedish Covenant Hospital Offers Biopsies, Navigation to Women in Need

Swedish Covenant HospitalSwedish Covenant Hospital is located in one of the most diverse zip codes in the United States. As a result, Shannon Sikkila, Women's Health Navigator, noted that, "Our hospital works diligently to provide culturally sensitive care to all women, regardless of their ability to pay."

With the help of Komen Chicago's grant, Swedish Covenant is able to provide biopsies for underinsured and uninsured women. In addition, it enables the hospital to employ a Survivorship Navigator, who connects women with breast cancer to support services such as nutrition classes, fitness programming, stress management seminars and support groups.

"With Komen's help, we were able to serve at least 35 women with biopsies last year, and navigated over 4,000 women," Shannon noted.

Swedish Covenant also provides screenings and diagnostic imaging for women in need. "We are able to offer services from screening through survivorship," Shannon highlighted, adding, "Chicago has a great network of providers who work together very effectively. We all want to help decrease the disparity rates in our city." Learn more»

Did You Know

When it comes to breast cancer, clinical trials are one of the biggest reasons for gains in breast cancer survival over the past 30 years.

In addition to improved survival, quality of life for people living with cancer has also improved as trials have helped identify more targeted treatments that can help limit some side effects of cancer therapies. Clinical trials have led to other medical advances in breast cancer, such as the use of mammography for screening, lumpectomy and radiation therapy as an effective alternative to mastectomy.
