Let's Run Breast Cancer Out of Town at the 2015 Lombard Race for the Cure!

Lombard 2015 RegistrationRegistration for the 2015 Lombard Race for the Cure is open and we want to see you there! The Race will be held on Sunday, September 20th, at the Yorktown Center in Lombard. Sign up for the 5K Timed Run, 5K Walk or 1 Mile Fun Walk with your friends and family! The Race site opens at 6:30 am, and the Race kicks off at 8:30 am. Learn more»

Meet Board Member Dr. Alicen J. McGowan

Alicen McGowanDr. Alicen J. McGowan recently joined Komen Chicago's Board of Directors, bringing her expertise in marketing, strategic planning and economic development.

As a Stage III breast cancer survivor, Alicen was active with Komen Boston prior to moving to Chicago, and participated in this year's Mother's Day Race for the Cure as a walker for the first time!  

"My goal for Komen Chicago is to get more people educated and motivated to get screenings. The earlier women and men are diagnosed, the more we can do."

Alicen wants everyone to know that, "There are people on the Komen Chicago Board who have gone through this journey and understand breast cancer on a different level. We're here to help."  Welcome Alicen!

AMITA Health Expands Services to Reach Women in Need 

AMITAAMITA Health Alexian Brothers Cancer Institute, located in Elk Grove Village, is ramping up to help more women in their community through their breast health and breast cancer screening program as a first-time Komen Chicago grantee. 

Karen Giammicchio, Director of AMITA Health Alexian Brothers Cancer Institute, noted that the program will provide screenings, diagnostic mammograms and ultrasounds to uninsured and underinsured women, including those in need who have high-deductible insurance plans.

"The Komen Chicago grant will enable us to fufill our mission to ensure people have access to care," highlighted Karen. For more information, call 1-877-717-7700.

Did You Know
In 2014, Susan G. Komen was able to:
  • Provide nearly 500,000 breast screenings for underserved men and women;
  • Expand its mission by engaging in programs in more than 30 countries worldwide; and 
  • Support nearly $35 million in new medical research that will lead to more effective treatments, and one day, cure breast cancer altogether.

Since its inception in 1997, Komen Chicago has invested:

  • Over $16 million in local programs, funding potentially lifesaving services for women and men in need locally.
  • Approximately $4.5 million in research for the cures.

In 2015, Komen Chicago has provided:

  • $1.05 million in grants to 14 local organizations to help provide services to underinsured and uninsured individuals throughout Chicago.
