GRANTEE FEATURE

Mount Sinai's Helping Her Live Serves West, Southwest Chicago Communities

Mount Sinai TeamMount Sinai's Helping Her Live: Gaining Control of Breast Cancer program was created in 2007, and has been a Komen grantee since 2014. The program is dedicated to providing community health workers, who also serve as navigators, to educate women about breast health and ensure their access to mammograms and breast cancer care and treatment.

Komen Chicago's grant enables Community Health Educator Oreletta Garmon to work with uninsured and underinsured women on Chicago's West side. "We attend a lot of community events, women's shelters and food pantries to help educate women on the importance of getting a mammogram, and then once they are enrolled in our system, we navigate them through the process all the way from mammogram to end of treatment."

In 2014 alone, Helping Her Live navigated 457 women to mammograms and educated over 1000 individuals. Program Manager Jacqueline Kanoon highlighted, "The program works with several hospitals in order to do what is best for the individual, regardless of whether they are a patient of Mount Sinai." Learn more»
